Sex and Porn Addiction

Sex and porn addiction has become a significant issue in our digital age. Accessing porn has never been easier and this has led to a significant rise in sex and porn addiction.

Sex addiction is characterised by an individual's excessive and uncontrollable engagement in sexual activities, which often leads to negative consequences in their personal and professional lives. Porn addiction is a specific type of sex addiction, where an individual compulsively consumes pornographic material. It should be noted that, while there is a significant overlap between sex and porn addiction, there are many porn addicts who do not self-define as sex addicts and vice versa.

While the vast majority of porn addicts are male, there are many women who also experience it.

How Therapy Can Help

Understanding the Root Causes

Therapy can help you explore and understand the underlying factors contributing to your addiction, such as trauma, emotional pain, or unmet needs. By identifying these root causes, we can address the core issues driving your behaviour.

Developing Healthy Coping Strategies

Through evidence-based techniques, you’ll learn healthier ways to cope with stress, anxiety, and emotional distress. This can reduce the reliance on addictive behaviours as a means of escape or self-soothing.

Managing Triggers and Preventing Relapse

You’ll learn to identify triggers and develop effective strategies to manage them, reducing the risk of relapse. This includes creating a personalised relapse prevention plan to support your long-term recovery.

Changing Maladaptive Thought Patterns

Together we can identify and challenge the negative thought patterns that perpetuate your addiction. By reframing these thoughts, you can develop a more positive and realistic outlook.

Enhancing Self-Esteem and Self-Worth

Therapy focuses on building your self-esteem and fostering a sense of self-worth. This can empower you to make healthier choices and improve your overall well-being.

Focusing on Relationship and Communications

Addiction often strains relationships with partners, family, and friends. Therapy provides a space to work on communication skills, rebuild trust, and establish healthier, more fulfilling relationships. Integrative therapy combines various therapeutic modalities, such as psychodynamic therapy, CBT, person-centred therapy, and existential therapy. This comprehensive approach addresses your unique needs and promotes overall healing and growth.

My own experience with Sex and Porn Addiction

As a therapist specialising in sex and porn addiction, I bring a unique perspective, having overcome this challenge myself. As a recovered sex and pornaddict, I understand the complex nature of addiction and the profound impact it can have on relationships, self-esteem, and overall physical and mental well-being. I experienced deep shame for years and felt I had nowhere to turn. Through my own recovery, of which my own personal therapy was an integral part, I know that with the right help, recovery Is always possible.

12 Step Groups

12 step groups, such as Sex Addicts Anonymous (SAA) and Sex and Pornography Addicts Anonymous (SPAA), can be highly effective for individuals struggling with sex and pornography addiction. If you are part of a 12-step program, therapy can be an invaluable help through the process. I have years of experience of 12 step groups having been a member of them myself during my recovery. However, twelve-step programs are not for everyone. Some individuals may find the spiritual or religious aspects of the program challenging, or they may just not find them effective for their own recovery. It's important for each person to find the recovery path that best aligns with their personal beliefs and needs.
